1. Check the location and time
Confirm that the forecast is for the actual launch area and planned flight window. Conditions can differ across a city, coastline or mountain valley. Look at the hourly trend, not only the current observation, so the return flight is covered too.
2. Compare wind and gusts with your aircraft
Use the exact aircraft manual as the reference. Review sustained wind, maximum gusts and direction. Leave a margin below the documented boundary because forecast error, height and turbulence can make the aircraft work harder than the surface number suggests.
3. Look for precipitation and moisture
Check the probability, timing and intensity of rain, snow or drizzle. Also consider fog, mist and condensation. Unless the manufacturer explicitly documents operation in those conditions, keep the aircraft dry. Moisture can affect electronics, sensors, visibility and braking performance during landing.
4. Confirm visibility and cloud clearance
You must be able to keep the aircraft visible as required by local rules. Haze, low cloud, glare and a dark background can reduce practical visibility before the reported weather value looks severe. Check both the forecast and what you can actually see from the launch point.
5. Account for temperature
Cold can reduce available battery performance; heat can raise battery and component temperatures. Follow the operating range and battery guidance for your equipment. Give batteries time to reach an appropriate temperature and avoid leaving them in a hot vehicle or direct sun.
6. Verify airspace and temporary restrictions
A clear sky does not make the flight legal. Check the official aviation source for controlled airspace, temporary restrictions, airport rules and any authorization required at the location. Planning maps are useful for screening, but official current information is the final reference.
7. Recheck at the launch site
- Wind direction agrees with the forecast
- No rain, mist or unexpected low cloud approaching
- Aircraft, props and batteries are ready
- Home point and return settings are correct
- Landing area and alternate landing option are clear
- Official airspace check is current
If the observation and forecast disagree, use the more conservative picture. Conditions at the aircraft matter more than the icon on a screen.
Keep the checklist active in flight
Watch battery use, position hold, ground speed and the surrounding sky. A flight plan should change when the evidence changes. Returning early is a normal operational decision, not a failed flight.
